.i.a. director general david petraeus is out tonight. just three days after president obama won re-election. petraeus says the reason isen extramarital affair. this is one of those stories that virtually no one saw coming. we begin with ed henry. >> reporter: officials were stunned when general petraeus came to the president and told him that he wanted to step down. he has had a long distinguished military record of decades, architect of the surge in iraq. you will remember. in 2007 under president bush. came back and became the commander on the ground in afghanistan against president obama. the general has come under fire for the c.i.a. role in benghazi terror attack, people close to him tonight insist the resignation had nothing to do with the ips dept. this is a personal failing that he talked about today in a statement saying after being married for over 37 years i showed extremely poor judgment by engaging in an extramarital affair. such behavior is unacceptable as a husband and leader of an organization such as ours. this afternoon, the president graciously accepted my resignation. ov

not factor into tuesday's election. between day, everyone. welcome to weekends with alex whitt. we begin with new details on what precipitated the end of the storied military career. we now know what started an fbi investigation that ended in general petraeus' abrupt resignation. it all started with complaints to the fbi about harassing e-mails sent from this woman, paula broadwell, to the another unnamed woman. petraeus was not the focus of investigators, but that led them to other e-mails between petraeus and broadwell which officials tell nbc news were indicative of an extramarital affair. the general admitted to an extramarital affair in his resignation letter. meanwhile we're now hearing from petraeus' former spokesperson. he talked to kristen welker. she's in washington with more. >> i interviewed steven boylan by phone saturday. he called petraeus a mentor and friend. boylan says he's stunned by the news about his former boss. in the meantime, new details are emerging about how this all came to light. according to multiple sources, the down fall of general david petraeus all start

the investigation into david petraeus and why it was kept secret until after the election. let's begun with john allen now finds himself in the middle of this growing scandal. he currently sios at commander of nato forces in afghanistan. and jill kelly said that she had been receiving bizarre comments from paula broadwell. what did the e-mails say? they characterize the messages as, quote, flirtatious in nature and inappropriate. we have just learned that two u.s. officials tell fox that it was more than just flirting. they describe them as sexually split and equivalent of phone sex over e-mail. he denies it but something is not adding up. we heard from the father of broadwell. this is something else entirely and the truth will come out. there is a lot more than meets the eye. if we are to believe the story we are told all of this started because paula broadwell sent anonymous e-mails to kelly. it's like cat ties stuff, phrases who do you think you are? you parade around the base. you need to take it down a notch. none of them reportedly referenced violence but the f.b.i. launched a full investi
